CHAPTER NINETEEN

Ellen

Adam and I spent a glorious time together this past week. He came over twice after school, Chris drove. I invited Susan to join us. We hung out on the beach, swimming if the water wasn’t too cold, played ping-pong or cards in the gaming room, and just had fun together. If Mom was busy with her costumes, Mrs. C watched us, though she tried to pretend she wasn’t. I knew it and that was okay with me. When it became too difficult for Adam to find a ride, we resorted to phone calls, which I found satisfying. We got to know each other better. Although I was attracted to him, knowing they watched us kept things cooled down. He hadn’t even kissed me yet. Golly, I wasn’t sure I was ready even though I liked him a lot.

Two weeks until Mom’s opening night and I had shown no interest in what she was doing. Mom had been begging me to go with her to rehearsals, but I had an excuse for one thing or the other, or because of Adam.

At school, Susan reminded me that her older sister, Ann, was singing in the chorus. She and her mother were going, and they invited me to join them. I thought it would be neat to surprise Mom, so I didn’t tell her.

Mom had left the house at seven. Susan would come for me at 7:30 p.m. The sound of their car horn let me know they had arrived.

“Who’s that blaring their car horn?” Mrs. C asked.

“I forgot to tell you I’m going to the rehearsal with my friend Susan. Her mother is driving.”

“That’s nice, dearie. Does your mother know you are going to be there?”

“Naw, I’ll surprise her.”

“I’m sure she will be happy to see you there.”

Mrs. C followed me out the front door. Susan’s mom got out of the car and hollered to Mrs. C. “Don’t worry, I’ll have her home early.”

Mrs. C nodded and went back inside the house.

Susan had opened the front passenger door and moved to the middle of the bench seat. I got in and shut the door.

“Who is that lady?” Mrs. Murphy asked.

“That’s Mrs. C our housekeeper.”

“Of course, you have a housekeeper,” Mrs. Murphy muttered, rolling her eyes.

I detected a slight sarcastic tone but ignored her. I had learned not everyone can afford a housekeeper anymore. Someone told me it used to be fairly common in the olden days like the 1940s, but after the War things changed.

The theater was near the school, as it shared the auditorium for events such as graduation, and band and orchestra concerts.

We had to be quiet inside while they rehearsed a dance number. The dancers wore full petticoats as practice before rehearsing in the finished costumes. A small orchestra in the pit consisted of adults and student musicians. I had gone to several stage performances with Mom and Dad in Boston. Those were enormous theaters with large professional orchestras. Not knowing what to expect from Starlight Bay Community Theater, they sounded pretty good.
